REAL 21 is a non-profit NGO dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Real River and the proper civic planning within its watershed, as an important component of a healthy environment for nature and society.

Real River flows from "Serra de Montejunto" to the coastal "Obidos Lagoon", around 80 km North of Lisbon, Portugal. It has been the central feature of a natural ecosystem draining a vast watershed area into the Atlantic Ocean and providing a habitat where fauna and flora flourished.

In recent decades, the waterway has been degraded as a habitat and caused the loss of shading, feed and channel structure. REAL 21 opposes these irresponsible actions through education and appearance before regulatory bodies. We also seek to restore the stream to its original healthy condition through habitat enhancement and tree planting.

REAL 21’s approach to citizen involvement has been the gathering of data and its presentation to the decision-makers, agencies and the public. We engage in co-operative ventures with public agencies and private landowners.

We welcome you to join with us in our efforts to restore this rural ecosystem and preserve it for generations to come. We could do more with your help!

"Mission Statement"

By attending PrepCom II, to be held next week at UN Headquarters in New York, we plan to review and assess the progress achieved in the implementation of Agenda 21 and the Program for the further implementation of Agenda 21, at the global, regional and local levels. In particular, we plan to dialogue with other stakeholders and NGO’s, especially those that work in the same area of interest.
